Cut-Out Case Study

Cut out animation is a form of animation that uses cut out pieces of: news paper, magazines, post cards, photos and books. These pieces are used make characters, settings, props etc to create a form of stop motion animation; they can be moved slightly before taking each photo to create the film.

Cut out animation is effective because it can tell a story and is one of the easiest forms of stop motion animation. this is because you can get the resources from anywhere and they can be moved very easily without having to redo it every time. and because of the unrealistic nature of it nothing has to be perfect, therefore you can use cheats to make it easier for yourself. Terry Gilliam would make his characters be on wheels so it wasn't difficult making them walk but this isn't obvious, it just looks like the characters are random. It's also good because you can change the scale of anything by layering cut outs on top and using more than one photo. It can be difficult because the thin pieces of paper can easily slip and go out of place if you're not careful and they can easily break if you have intricate cut outs.
The best types of cut out animations are usually short, snappy and very random. Most of the time they don't make sense and do not have a very realistic story line.
For example in class we watched some of Terry Gilliam's animations and they were almost like compilations of really short clips they often included fast movements like things falling and crashing. this works because the length of the clips add humour. This would appeal to children because they have short attention spans so they would stay engaged. also the random funny sketches would be appropriate because it doesn't take a lot of thought to understand it. Image result for cut out animation
How to Make a \Cut Out Animation
First of all you need a story board for your animation including sound effects and the length of shot.
Then you would find your resources and cut out what you wanted from your magazines etc.
Once you have cut them out you can airbrush them to make the look 3D if you want to.
You can separate the bodies for easier movement.
To make the cuts outs ore interesting you would colour them in however you like if they need it.
Next you use a black pen to draw on the edges of the pieces to disguise the fact that it is paper.
You will need a setting so you should create that next.
Put all the pieces in an envelope so you don't lose them
To create the best photos use high lighting for less shadows, put padding underneath and a clear film on top of the cut outs to flatten them. Also use tape to stick them downs so they don't move.
Last of all you take the photo, put the film up, move the cut outs, put film back and repeat until you have completed the whole animation.Image result for cut out animation
